Fog along the coast of Maine can be most unpredictable, appearing out of nowhere and blanketing the landscape in white mist, which can add a mysterious feel to the scenery. Usually the fog can be found in the morning hours, but sometimes it can move in on an area at any time of the day or night, and often quite unexpectedly. Fog can hug the ground or hover at the mountain tops, and when it's really cold, a mist can rise from the sea and loom like some scene from a Steven King movie; this is referred to as "sea smoke."
