Most birds are difficult to photograph, while some can be real actors and pose for the camera and others can even become a friend. I travel extensively and go to extreme lengths to photograph wild birds in their natural habitat. This often requires stealth and a good deal of patients (a good long lens helps too). Bird photography can be immensely rewarding to a determined photographer.

My bluejay friend, "Blue"
I have always had an affinity for birds and often find myself in lengthy conversations with an occasional visitor. I have made friends with many birds, my favorite being "Blue" the blue jay, we spent a summer hanging out together (to the stunned disbelief of my cats).
I was paddling my kayak at Lower Sabao Lake in Maine, when I spotted this bald eagle in the tree tops. I watched as he swooped over the lake and snagged a large fish from the water. He soared over the lake to land about half a mile away on the shore. I paddled like a mad man taking the occasional shot as I went until I was close enough to simply watch the action as a second eagle challenged the first for his prize. The feathers were flying all over the place. . . these guys meant business. A lone loon screeched and fled in fright from the battle scene. In the end the first eagle maintained his dominance and finished his meal in peace, though I suspect he was hurting from the encounter.
